Super Sam wins singles gold Surrey U17 gold tournament

SuperSam

Super Sam wins singles gold Surrey U17 gold tournament From an unseeded position Avon’s Sam Weekes defeated all the opposition in a strong draw at the recent Surrey U17 gold tournament. Comfortably beating the 3/4 seed in his group he went onto the knock out stages where he won 3 very tight games to take the title. A fantastic result for a talented player with a great future ahead of him.

Round 2 Senior County Championships Roundup

Avon 1st

Avon 1sts moved up a spot to 2nd from 3rd in The Premiership after R2 of the SCC. Middlesex, with a team of international star players, are running away with the league and are already too far ahead to be caught. The weekend saw the return of Kirby Ngan to competition for the first time since her injury at The Nationals in September. Chris Coles also returned to the competitive court for the first time in 9 months to pick up a team confidence-boosting win v Hampshire with Adam Porter. Aidan Gibbons made his debut for Avon 1sts and can now boast he has played for the county at every level available to him from Un12 upwards. An 8-3 win on Saturday v Glasgow & Strathclyde and a 7-4 win on Sunday v Hampshire had a 4-7 loss v Yorkshire sandwiched between them. A very good weekend for a team who are fighting hard for each other to finish as high as they possibly can in the Premiership following their best ever 3rd place finish last season. Xiao Xuan Teh was the star performer of the weekend taking five rubbers from six played, beating both English & Scottish top 10 singles players and striking up a very effective doubles partnership with the very sharp Alison Marr. The team looks forward to taking on Leicestershire, Middlesex, and Sussex in a very tough final weekend in March. Team - Chris Evans, George Priestman, George Nicolau, Adam Porter, Aidan Gibbons, Chris Coles, Geoff Ball, Kirby Ngan, Devon Minnis, Magda Lozniceriu, Alison Marr, Xiao Xuan Teh

Won 8 – 3 vs. Berkshire

Lost 5 – 6 vs. Worcestershire

Avon 2s kicked off round two against Berkshire, looking to close the two-point gap on the current league leaders. Avon found themselves 4-1 up after some strong singles matches from Tom, Campbell, Jason, Amy, and Pippa. Special mention to Campbell who was drafted in just 12 hours prior to stepping on court and dominated his match from the start. Level doubles followed the impressive singles run with Avon taking all four rubbers. Mixed brought a late surge from Berks who took both matches. The final score was an impressive 8-3 to Avon 2s.

The match against Worcestershire can only be described as a ‘could-have-gone-either-way’ tie. An outstanding performance by Tom saw him take top-grade Ryan Quek to three ends and kick-start an afternoon of must-see matches. Rob took the men’s singles win of the afternoon in no-nonsense fashion with Amy and Pippa making sure to do the same. Avon was 3-2 up going into the doubles where all four matches went to three ends (a nervy watch for supporters). Rob and Jason grabbed their win and Pippa and Lucy clinched it 22-20 in the third end to take Avon to a 5-4 lead going into the mixed. Both matches were taken by Worcs who pulled away in the closing stages. The final score was a nail-biting 5-6 to Worcestershire.

As always, the support was incredible, the battles immense and the shot selection a thing of beauty. Avon 2s will head to the final weekend with everything to play for – I can’t wait!

Male Players’ Player of the Match: Campbell Wilson – gutsy performances from start to finish, a pleasure to watch

Female Players’ Player of the Match: Amy Reddaway – consistent, professional and determined

With an exciting but tough day playing Cornwall and Worcester I knew we needed to pull 2 wins out the bag if we were to fight for a chance at promotion. We started with a great win against Cornwall 6-5 which was pushed right up until the final mixed. Darren Wong stepped up to singles in the 2nd match and beat a very strong Ken Teh. He also won 4 out of 5 games. The whole team fought right up until the final match which was also a 6-5 victory against Worcester. Sid Halder played his debut match for the 3rd team and proved why he was there. He played superbly and won 3 out of 4 games only losing out on his singles 21-19 in a 3 ender. Daz Wong and Bonny Mo took players players of the match and was very much deserved by both. We are now in a Promotion battle with only 5 points between promotion and relegation. We know which way we will go and I am looking forward to the challenge.

Avon 4ths first match of the league against non-Avon opposition was a toughie against promotion contenders Dorset 3rds. A difficult start saw us going 4-0 but tremendous rallying by the team saw us win 4 of the next 7 matches resulting in a 7-4 loss for the team. The next match against Wiltshire 2nds was an emphatic 8-3 win. Congratulations to players of the match Oscar Haywood and Louise King for some great wins and team spirit. With a special mention to Kira our team mascot!

Some incredibly impressive badminton on display today from Avon 5ths. Avon 5ths-5 Avon 6ths-6, Avon 5ths-2 West Glamorgan-9 The scoreline doesn't reflect the tenacity, determination, and commitment of every single member of the team. A couple of mentionable moments: Sam Weekes scalping a very talented West Glamorgan player in the 2nd singles. Alice and Skye taking the other rubber against West Glamorgan. Hannah and Izzy beating Anna Manley and Becky Cox after dropping the first end 21-10. Some world class shots from Dan Bethell. And the Will Mullaney dive count reached a body-bruising 9!!

Avon 6s start off with a debut for 14year-old Ben Kemp who starts his senior county debut with a win. A tough match ends in a 6-5 win vs the 5s. Up then against Dorset 3s who just took a 7-4 win against the 4s. Some cramp creeping into a few players but well done to players of the match Ben Kemp and Lucy Denning both taking singles wins during the day.
