National Junior Badminton League 2016

abajuniors3 abajuniors5 Avon have entered the National Junior League U12 and U14 competition, this competition has been piloted throughout the country this year with 16 leagues taking part.
6 clubs took part in the U12 competition -  Chew Valley, St Ursula’s, Uphill, Avon County squad and Yate Racketeers. In the U14 group we had teams from Chew Valley, St Ursula’s, Clevedon and Uphill.
Thornbury Leisure Centre was the venue for the tournament to see who would go through to represent us at the finals. Each team could have had a maximum of 8 players with a minimum of 2 girls and 2 boys with any 4 taking part in each match.
The format was the same as the AJ Bell National Badminton League (NBL) with each match comprising of 5 rubbers Girls Singles, Boys Singles, Boys Doubles, Girls Doubles and Mixed Doubles. The children and scorer’s (we used team members not playing to score) coped extremely well with the new style of scoring which was best of three games to 9 points, we did not actually use the Powerplay. Flashing lights/music and pink shuttles was beyond my capabilities on this occasion, maybe next year!
After some very close and really enjoyable games the outcome was  Chew Valley A winning the U12 with St Ursula’s the U14 winners.
Chew Valley and St Ursula’s go through to represent Avon along with Uphill who won the U16 Avon league this season.
The finals are being held at the National Badminton Centre at Milton Keynes  on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June.
The players at the finals will be encouraged to replicate a professional badminton player by having post match interviews and photo shoots. Olympic silver medallist Gail Emms will also be on-hand during the event to share words of wisdom and answer any of the questions they may have.
All supporters welcome at Milton Keynes and good luck to all the players and coaches. U16Uphill2016winners.jpgGold and silverU14.Chew & St Ursula's.jpgMedal Winners JNBLU12&U14 2016.jpg
