Organisers of the 2016 Avon County Junior Badminton Tournament expressed delight at the high standard of competition on show. More than 100 girls and boys in age categories from under-12s to under-18s, representing 15 schools and clubs, descended on Keynsham’s Wellsway School Sports Centre to produce 228 matches over two full-on days of enthralling singles and doubles action. Organised by Avon Badminton Association, the tournament was run by Bob Hammersley with the help of tournament secretary Anshalu Bansal and a host of volunteers including Judy White, Bronny Bennett, Evelyn Heighton and Jackie Millward. It was certainly an eventful and successful tournament for one competitor, Amy Mellersh, who not only helped out on the organisational side of the weekend but went on to win the under-14 girls singles and doubles titles in Chew Valley colours. Trophies were presented by Avon County captain Will Mellersh and Avon Junior County chairman Ian Coles on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Avon Badminton development officer Penny Shears said: “It was wonderful to see so many boys and girls in four different age groups packing the sports hall over the two days and watched by so many spectators and helpers. “While the fun and enjoyment aspects were clearly there, the competitive factor was always apparent and some of the quality of badminton on show was of a very high standard, possibly the highest we have seen at this tournament.” Anyone, regardless of age or experience, wishing to find out more about badminton in and around the North Somerset, Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire areas can contact Penny Shears at
