All England Seniors 2017

With a record entry of 418 players from across the world, including 12 Masters players from Avon, the 101st All England took place over the weekend and two of the Avon players reached finals.

Derek Simmons reached the Final of the 65+ XD with Betty Bartlett (Surrey) losing to a strong Swedish pairing 21-19, 21-12. The Swedes had beaten the Danish No1 seeds and finished the day without dropping a game at any stage see picture below.

Dave Gribble playing with Nick Goode came through a semi-final against fellow 55+ Avon player Ian Nicholls with partner Keith Vernon 21-18, 21-19,  but lost in the final in three to the Danish No 2 seeds 14-21, 21-18, 12-21.

Playing at 65+ WD both Joanna Elson, with Vicki Betts from Hampshire and Val O’Neill with Janet Fletcher from Derbyshire, won their groups and progressed to semi-finals, Jo and Vicki beat the seeded pair in their group but lost to the English No1 seeds with Val and Janet losing to the Danish No 2 seeds.

Also representing Avon at these Championships were: Cathy Alexander, Viv Edwards, Cathy Jowett, Penny Shears and Mike Cox, Paul Chard and Ben Peterson.
